Located in Oregun, Lagos - a long-standing industrial hub integral to Lagos’ economic landscape – the Rack Centre IPP is a groundbreaking initiative that addresses the growing energy needs of Africa's foremost Tier III Constructed Facility Certified data center.
Prior to Elektron’s involvement, the data center relied solely on diesel generators for over a decade, which was a costly and environmentally damaging solution. Since commissioning the first 5MW phase of the IPP in March 2023 Rack Centre has transitioned to a cleaner, more reliable gas-fired energy source, reducing its carbon footprint by over 83.9 million metric tons annually.
Phase 2 of the project will expand the plant's capacity to 20MW, meeting Rack Centre's anticipated growth and supporting its energy needs with adaptable capacity. The plant operates on pipeline natural gas with compressed natural gas (CNG) backup, ensuring resilience and environmental efficiency.
By cutting dependency on diesel and grid power, the project provides cost-effective, eco-friendly energy that aligns with Lagos State's environmental initiatives. It enhances Rack Centre's reliability and operational stability, positioning Lagos as a regional hub for technological innovation.
By powering one of Africa’s most critical data infrastructure facilities, Elektron is not just lighting up servers - it is driving the future of digital connectivity across the continent.
